Moving Audiences

Working as a producer for the classical music festival Montforter Zwischentöne, we always sought new concert designs to allow audiences a more concentrated and intensive listening experience. One of these reoccurred designs included our audiences moving from one place to another during the event.

For instance, in our summer edition, we established the concert walk in collaboration with Vorarlberg’s biggest symphonic orchestra. Small groups of musicians would play in places all over the city centre: restaurants, wine cellars, parks, private gardens, alleys - all within walking distance. Equipped with a map, our audiences chose their concert program for the night and walked from one mini-concert to the other.

In collaboration with an author and composer, we designed a walking reading in a suburb of Feldkirch. The author would write a story that takes place in three locations of that suburb: a carhouse, a school gym, and a fire station. The story itself was read in exactly these locations.

Using multiple unusual locations and allowing audiences to move creates a sense of freedom. And it allows for new encounters on the way.
